Frankenwells (Complex Well Designs)

A collection of weird and wonderful well designs

Well design gets complicated and extremely efficient in mature basins such as the WCSB. From well established to convoluted multilaterals, up-tracks, high turns, wine-racks, cubes to chicken legs, paper clips and other weird and wonderful designs, this is a collection of technology pushing developments.

Below you can find a gallery of some of the wildest well designs, primarily from Alberta, along with links to the original #Frankenwell posts.

Multilateral wells were typically drilled to drain heavier oil from low permeability reservoirs, in rocks that maintain stability even without production casing. Their application expanded greatly in recent years, and is becoming a staple of late stage mature basin development. Recent application of multilateral well designs extend to light oil plays (such as the Bakken in east Saskatchewan or Belly River in Central Alberta) and even low permeability gas reservoirs.
