Geological Wellsite Supervision is at the centre of Chinook’s services. For more than 20 years, we have been providing professional wellsite geologists to clients of all sizes in the oil and gas industry. We take pride in providing the highest quality wellsite services including:

  • Cuttings sample preparation, description, logging, analysis and interpretation
  • Reservoir navigation and geosteering
  • Directional drilling and MWD/LWD supervision
  • Mud logging and gas detection supervision
  • Special geological operations supervision (DST, coring, wireline logging)
  • Comprehensive reporting and client communication

Petrographic Analysis of Drill Cuttings

Our wellsite geologists will perform the preparation, description and logging of samples:

Preparation

Our geologists prepare, vial and label dry cuttings, then index them for ulterior analyses.

Description of samples includes primary lithology, main constituents, grain size, cementation (type and degree), accessory minerals, porosity type, fluorescence and cut fluorescence.

Our geologists will also perform the interpretative side of cuttings analysis, providing:

  • Permeability estimation (Sneider/Archie classes)
  • Porosity estimation (porosity type, percent estimation)
  • Chromatography ratio interpretation (gas, oil, wet, condensate, residual, dry zones)
  • Basic interpretation of wireline logs (identification of porous zones, tight stringers, gas windows, etc)

Logging

Our logs use consistent, easy-to-read-layouts with comprehensive details. Besides petrographic descriptions of drill cuttings, striplogs include curves (geology and drilling curves, chromatography, wireline logging), directional surveys, mud data, bit data, engineering comments, and more.

We also provide the following striplogs dependent on well type:

  • Measured depth striplogs for vertical wells
  • Measured depth striplogs for deviated wells and build sections (with directional data)
  • TVD gamma logs for formation tops correlation on build sections of horizontal wells
  • Lateral logs detailing well cross-section and directional wellpath
  • Composite logs including chromatograph curves and ratios
  • Composite logs including wireline porosity and induction; or tailored to specific logs (spectral gamma, sonic, resistivity), core logs (large scale, based on core plugs or core tube ends)

Geosteering and Reservoir Navigation

Our geologists plot the actual well path against the designed well trajectory, perform MWD/LWD data stream monitoring, identify the wellpath position relative to stratigraphic markers , calculate formation dips along the wellpath and propose directional targets ahead of the bit.

To ensure the wellpath follows the optimal trajectory, our geologists are in constant communication with directional drillers regarding:

  • Best reservoir
  • Best wellbore placement
  • Optimal drill path

Reservoir navigation is performed using different disciplines and approaches, depending on reservoir characteristics:

  • Correlation geosteering
  • Resistivity forward modeling
  • Geomodel based
  • Precedent based
  • Petrography and cuttings analysis
  • Geochemical analysis
  • Gas ratio analysis
  • Hybrid and combination methods

Mud Logging Supervision

The advances in un-manned chromatographs/spectrographs eliminate the need for an additional mudlogger. Our wellsite geologists can rig in, set up, supervise and maintain a modern gas detector, including:

  • Lag time calibration and maintenance of dryer system
  • Data collection
  • Plotting of chromatography curves into composite logs
  • Ratio analyses in real-time
  • Geosteering / reservoir navigation aided by gas ratios
  • Gas shows logging (gas show tally) and interpretation (formation gas vs produced gas)
  • Supervision of gas detector for abnormally high gas values, setting alarm and alerting rig personnel when safety boundaries are crossed

Special Geological Operations Supervision

We also offer DST, coring and wireline logging supervision as well as specialized sampling.

DST supervision
  • Operations supervision and coordination
  • Data collection and transmittal
  • Pressure gage curve plotting
  • Initial interpretation (formation damage, formation pressures, test efficiency)

Coring supervision
  • Core equipment coordination
  • Core recovery supervision
  • Correct labeling of core boxes or core tubes (for sleeved core)
  • Spot core description based on core plugs/tube end samples (lithological descriptions, core logs based on core plugs or core observation, facies identification)

Wireline logging supervision
  • Coordination of logging program with loggers
  • On site QC of logging process (timing, log quality, tracking lost time)
  • Basic interpretation of wireline logs (formation tops, identification of porous zones and gas cross-over, identification of tight stringers)
  • Consistent report templates detailing logging operations

Specialized sampling
  • Iso-tubes collection for gas/isotopes identification
  • Geo-jars collection for mud sample/wet cuttings sample, free oil/bitumen analysis
  • Sidewall coring supervision
  • XRD/XRF/FTIR/RockEval sample collection and analysis
  • Field analysis: XRF and FTIR
